Shared Lives scheme rated Good by Care Quality Commission

17/10/2017

Merton Shared Lives Scheme, which supports vulnerable adults to live independently, has been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission, following a recent inspection.

The council-run service enables adults who have learning disabilities or mental health issues to lead fuller everyday lives. Support provided by a shared lives carer is tailored to each person’s needs. This may include help with housework, assistance with completing forms or responding to letters, tips on budgeting or accompanying them to meet new people or take up a new hobby. This vital support could be provided over the long term or short term or as respite care.

The Care Quality Commission rated the Merton Shared Lives Scheme as Good in all five categories of the inspection – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

Its report said: “Carers and staff demonstrated a very good understanding of the specific needs of people…People were happy with the quality of support received.”

Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Councillor Tobin Byers said: “Our Shared Lives Scheme really improves the quality of daily life for some of our most vulnerable residents. The Care Quality Commission’s Good rating recognises the hard work and commitment from our staff and the high quality of the support provided by carers to enable people to live independently.”
